Computer & Data Security:

It may seem very obvious to suggest that computer equipment should be kept as safely and securely as possible, but all too often people skip over some of the easy measures they can take, to help deter thieves, and their valuable equipment safe.

It would seem to make good sense that if you invest a considerable sum of money on a computer system for your organisation, and then depend on that system for your day to day working, that you do all you can to help keep the equipment, and data it contains, as safe as you can.

Helping keep your equipment secure:

Below are some simple 'theft deterrent' measures you can take:

  • Special locks can be purchased to help secure equipment to your desktop
  • You can mark your equipment with ultra-violet ID pens
  • You could use an etching kit, or even engrave ID to your equipment
  • Computer alarms can be used (that go off when equipment is moved after being disconnected from the mains)
  • You can record and store your serial numbers
  • Have photographs of your equipment (this could help with recovery in the event of a theft)
  • Also, check to make sure your Insurance policy covers all of your IT equipment

Helping keep your data safe:

Below are some steps you can take to help keep your data safe:

  • Use 'system' /  BIOS passwords
(to help prevent unauthorised users, and also protect your data in the event of theft)
  • Make regular data-backups to DVD/CD-Rom, Flash Drives, external Hard Drives etc...
  • Store your data back-ups in a safe place (e.g. in a locked drawer or in a safe if you have one)
  • Keep a copy of your back-up's outside of your work place (could be vital in the event of a fire)
  • Install 'Anti-Virus' Software and ensure it is kept up-to date to protect you from 'new' Virus patterns
  • Install a 'Firewall' i.e. software that monitors your Internet connection and stops 'hackers' etc. from getting into your computer system
